Hollywood Woodwork hosted the Interior Architecture class of Florida International University in a morning orientation to the engineering process and a plant tour. Dr. Philip Abbott, ASID, IDEC, class professor, is developing coursework that will give his students real-life experience in the interior design career path. As part of that development the class’ term project is to design a reception desk. The visit to Hollywood Woodwork allowed the students to view the engineering process from Interior Design drawings through final approved shop drawings for five unique reception desks.
The presentation was followed by a shop tour where the students were able to learn more about the custom woodwork manufacturing process and see some of the reception desks from the engineering presentation that are currently in process on the shop floor. Dr. Abbott commented on the value of such experiences for his students, bringing theory into much better focus in light of the reality of actual production.
We are very excited about Dr. Abbott’s vision for the Interior Architecture department at FIU,” said Dave Bolt, Hollywood Woodwork COO. “We are looking forward to future interactions with his classes. This allows us to influence future designers with valuable insights regarding the collaborative process that takes place between the designer and the manufacturer in optimal conditions.
